The role of a Business Development Manager typically sits within either the Sales or Marketing team. Their primary role is to generate business for their company, whether that be from new customers or clients, or nurturing relationships with existing ones.

Business Development Manager responsibilities:

·       Research prospective clients in agreed target markets

·       Identify new potential target markets

·       Understand marketing strategies to attract new clients

·       Collaborate with design, marketing and sales teams to ensure a joined up strategy across all departments

·       Maintain relationships with existing clients

·       Have a deep understanding of the company’s products/services and the industry position

·       Keep up to date with latest industry developments

·       Conduct competitor analysis to ensure you stay ahead of the curve and are in tune with their developments

Business Development Manager qualifications and skills:

·       Sometimes a relevant degree such as marketing or business management is required

·       Typically 5+ years experience is required for a management role

·       Excellent organisation, time management and prioritisation skills

·       Proficiency in the Microsoft suite – word, excel, PowerPoint etc.

·       Experience using databases – these are often bespoke to the industry

·       Strong technical knowledge of the product/service/industry is desirable

·       Exceptional communication skills with the ability to break down complex technical language to prospective clients/customers

·       Influencing skills are also important in this role

Career Progression

Often the next step for a Business Development Manager is to move into a Head of Business Development or Business Development Director role. This is sometimes called a Sales Director or a Commercial Director. As the Business Development Manager roles has experience interacting with many different business functions in a commercial manner, it is a common role to progress into a senior position such as Managing Director.

Business Development Manager Salary:

The average Business Development Manager salary in the UK is £35,012 per year. This is a role that typically comes with a bonus or commission as part of the package, as well as a company car or travel allowance as it is usually a field based role. As a business development executive looking at taking your first step into management, you can usually expect to receive a starting salary of around £24,000.Senior Business Development Managers often take home a base salary of around £56,000 per year as a base salary, and as much as an additionally £22,000 in commission.
