HR Officer Jobs
The role of Human Resources Officer suits those who are interested in developing and implementing HR policies that are relevant to the objectives of the business. HR Officers are there to ensure that an organisation puts together a balanced workforce with the right levels of skills and experience. As well as that, they are entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining training and development opportunities for the staff.
HR Officers are typically employed by banks, retailers, charities and large industrial organisations.
Responsibilities
HR Officers report to a HR Manager or Director, and share similar responsibilities to that of a HR Advisor. The responsibilities of a HR Officer can be very broad, performing a wide range of duties business-wide, or they can specialise in areas such as health and safety or recruitment.
To be a successful HR Officer candidates must have thorough understanding of a business’ overall objectives, all responsibilities must be undertaken with these at the forefront of their mind.
Assist line management with the implementation of policies and procedures
Determine the training needs of the staff, in relation to the business objectives
Oversee the negotiation of employment terms for employees
Conduct employee evaluations and appraisals alongside line management
Negotiate with trade unions and staff representatives
Work with line management on the recruitment process
Undertake regular company-wide salary reviews
Oversee the collection of HR data
Encourage personal development opportunities for employees
Organise staff training sessions and team building activities
Expected Skills & Qualifications
A HR or business degree qualification,or equivalent, is required when applying for a HR Officer role. Candidates may also be expected to have a CIPD certificate. Most employers will expect candidates to have gained numerous years’ experience in the field of HR prior to the application.
Interpersonal communication skills are essential for this role, as HR Officers work with a variety of different people across a business. Key skills include:
CIPD qualified
Understanding of contemporary HR systems
Fluent in modern IT programmes, eg. Microsoft
Meticulous attention to detail
Strong organisational and administrative skills
Commitment to personal development and acquiring new knowledge
Ability to recognise potential staff conflicts
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to form working relationships on a variety of different levels
Salary
The average salary for a HR Officer in the United Kingdom is currently around £24,000 per year. The entry-level salary currently averages at around £22,000 per year. More experienced candidates can hope to earn upwards of £30,000 per year plus bonuses.
Career Progression
Following on from a successful stint as a HR Officer, and with the relevant years of experience behind them in this role, candidates can progress upwards towards a management role in the team they are a part of. The role of HR Manager seems the most common progression for most candidates. Other progressions include a Senior role of the HR Officer position, HR Advisor and HR Consultancy. Progression in HR is very fluid and there will be plenty of opportunities to specialise in a specific area along the way.
