Marketing Analyst
The responsibilities in marketing analyst jobs vary depending on the needs of an employer or client, however they generally fall into four main categories:
Research
Your research will be used to inform the business decisions your employer or client takes. Providing them with sound, reliable information requires a comprehensive research strategy that ensures timely and thorough market research is carried out.
This might include preparing surveys, conducting interviews and sourcing historical and current market statistics, as well as conducting assessments of any competitors and influential consumer trends, to develop a comprehensive insight into the opportunities and challenges within a given market.
Collaboration
Your research into a market and the opportunities or challenges it presents will be informed by your independent research as well as the input of internal or external parties, either because they will influence your findings and subsequent recommendations, or be affected by them.
Often, that includes personnel in marketing, finance, production and distribution and you will need to be able to communicate effectively in person or in writing, with them.
Analysis
You must be able to interpret and analyse large volumes of information from various sources which must be assessed, in accordance with your considerations of competitor behaviour and any fluctuating economic and consumer trends, to identify business opportunities, calculate risks, accurately forecast ROI and make recommendations about the steps, costs and time needed to achieve them.
Reporting
Your findings and any recommendations you make will need to be presented, often in person and in print in concise, clear and visually engaging ways.
Salary Range
Depending on the work location, your experience and levels of responsibility, the average salary for marketing analyst jobs ranges from £18k to £38k+, but may also include the potential to earn performance related bonuses.
Skills & Qualifications
When recruiting for these roles, employers are typically looking for very specific skills. When you’re applying for marketing analyst jobs, you should prioritise these on your CV:
Excellent organisation and time management
Objective, logical and methodical approach to capturing data
Critical and detailed attention to the analysis of data
Interpretation of data from a variety of sources
Excellent interpersonal skills
Creative thinking
Problem solving
Report writing
Strong IT skills are essential for managing, analysing and maintaining the integrity of data, particularly in programmes such as Excel, Access, SQL, SAP and Qlickview
Excellent presentation skills
Flexibility to travel for work
Qualifications
There are no formal qualifications required for this role so a potential employer will be looking for experience or the relevant skills that can easily be transferred from another profession.
Experience & Career Progression
If you’re a business, marketing, mathematics, economics, sociology or IT graduate then your academic research, analysis and reporting skills are ideal for many entry-level marketing analyst jobs.
If you’re planning on moving into marketing analytics from a similar profession then being able to demonstrate experience in project management, research and data analysis as well as problem solving, communication and reporting skills will appeal to a potential employer.
Career Progression
As a marketing analyst your skills are highly desirable and make an excellent foundation for career progression into the following occupations:
Account Director
Business Development Manager
International Marketing Manager
