Graphic Designer Jobs

Responsibilities

Graphic Designers are responsible for designing graphics to be used in media products. They are often part of a wider digital marketing team and therefore report to a Digital Marketing Manager or Creative Manager. General responsibilities include:

  • Develop design briefs and follow through on them efficiently

  • Liaising with clients, or the subsequent Account Manager, to understand the business objectives

  • Develop graphics and designs based on the design brief

  • Quote clients, or work with the Account Manager to do so, based on the time taken to finish a project

  • Work with a wide range of media products

  • Express a commitment towards personal development and the acquisition of new design skills

Expected Skills & Qualifications

Although entry at a Junior level is not specific to those who have a Higher Education qualification, preference may be for those who have a degree in Graphic Design or Art. Candidates will be expected to display a portfolio of past work, and this portfolio should display a sound knowledge. Full skills include:

  • Superb IT skills and a fluency in using design software such as InDesign or Adobe Illustrator

  • Creativity and innovation are what sets Graphic Designers apart

  • Good time management and organisation skills when working to a deadline

  • An appreciation of client goals and objectives

  • Meticulous proofreading with regards to text copy

Salary

The average salary for a Graphic Designer in the United Kingdom is currently around £22,000 per year. The beginning salary currently averages at around £16,00 per year for Junior positions. More experienced candidates, or those who have been in the position for a number of years, can hope to earn upwards of £30,000 per year plus small bonuses. (via PayScale)

Career Progression

Following on from a successful stint as a Graphic Designer, candidates may progress into a Senior Graphic Designer role – however, based on the experience gained, it is not uncommon to see Graphic Designers transition into Web Design or Development.

​Merseyside is a county in the North West of England. It is comprised of Knowsley, St Helens, Sefton, Wirral and Liverpool. Merseyside is so named after the river Mersey, which runs through the county. It’s a relatively new county, having only come into existence in 1974.It was previously part of Lancashire and Cheshire, two pre-existing neighbouring counties. Liverpool is the major city within Merseyside; known as a vibrant cultural centre in the UK. Home to many art galleries and museums, Aintree racecourse, two rival football teams and of course, The Beatles. Liverpool is renowned to be a city with a thriving creative and sporting culture that is as diverse as it is passionate.

Outside the city and across the river lies the Wirral Peninsula – an area filled with typically British seaside towns and promenades thanks to being almost entirely surrounded by water. Merseyside is also blessed with beaches to the north, encapsulating both Crosby and Formby. Formby is famed for it’s squirrel reserve, and for *that* beach scene in Peaky Blinders. In fact, much of Peaky Blinders has been filmed in various locations across Merseyside. In recent years it has become a popular film location, particularly in period dramas, and as an alternative to London. The famous Liver building and St George's Hall have been used as sets to represent Gotham in the latest Batman film.
