Graphic Designer Jobs

Responsibilities

Graphic Designers are responsible for designing graphics to be used in media products. They are often part of a wider digital marketing team and therefore report to a Digital Marketing Manager or Creative Manager. General responsibilities include:

  • Develop design briefs and follow through on them efficiently

  • Liaising with clients, or the subsequent Account Manager, to understand the business objectives

  • Develop graphics and designs based on the design brief

  • Quote clients, or work with the Account Manager to do so, based on the time taken to finish a project

  • Work with a wide range of media products

  • Express a commitment towards personal development and the acquisition of new design skills

Expected Skills & Qualifications

Although entry at a Junior level is not specific to those who have a Higher Education qualification, preference may be for those who have a degree in Graphic Design or Art. Candidates will be expected to display a portfolio of past work, and this portfolio should display a sound knowledge. Full skills include:

  • Superb IT skills and a fluency in using design software such as InDesign or Adobe Illustrator

  • Creativity and innovation are what sets Graphic Designers apart

  • Good time management and organisation skills when working to a deadline

  • An appreciation of client goals and objectives

  • Meticulous proofreading with regards to text copy

Salary

The average salary for a Graphic Designer in the United Kingdom is currently around £22,000 per year. The beginning salary currently averages at around £16,00 per year for Junior positions. More experienced candidates, or those who have been in the position for a number of years, can hope to earn upwards of £30,000 per year plus small bonuses. (via PayScale)

Career Progression

Following on from a successful stint as a Graphic Designer, candidates may progress into a Senior Graphic Designer role – however, based on the experience gained, it is not uncommon to see Graphic Designers transition into Web Design or Development.
