About the Role

WordPress Developers are responsible for both the back-end and front-end development of websites that are fitted with the WordPress CMS. They are skilled in HTML5, CSS3, PHP and Javascript programming. They are employed to develop the front and back end facilities, as well as creating WordPress themes and plugins for added site functionality.


Specific responsibilities are often determined by the projects that the WordPress Developer is working on, however generally speaking:

  • Generate website storyboards into full functional websites with a WordPress CMS installed

  • Use efficient, industry standard coding to develop the site (HTML5, CSS3, PHP and Javascript)

  • Collaborate with the other developers in the team to produce the stakeholders’ vision

  • Test and troubleshoot the website and its applications

  • Ensure the website performs highly with low load times

  • Test the website for mobile responsiveness issues

  • Fix any bugs that have been flagged by testers or the stakeholders

  • Assist Senior staff in the establishment of overall company practice with regards to web development

  • Have a good understanding of, and work towards the industry best practices

  • Be committed to personal development

Expected Skills & Qualifications

Candidates should express an enthusiasm web development in general, grounded by a solid previous experience managing and developing WordPress websites. Candidates must be well versed in contemporary coding languages and practices to build user interfaces for websites.

Exemplary time management skills will help set candidates apart, as with that comes the ability to manage projects and deadlines.

There are a number f core skills required for this role:

  • A strong knowledge of the WordPress CMS framework with proven experience

  • Write legible HTML5, CSS3, PHP and Javascript to a high standard

  • Solid understanding of object-oriented programming work

  • Experience with the contemporary web application frameworks

  • Good communication skills and troubleshooting techniques

  • Ability to problem solve and persevere through issues


The average salary for a WordPress Developer in the United Kingdom is currently around £24,000 per year. The beginning salary currently averages at around £19,000 for Junior Developers. Experienced candidates, or those who have been in the position for a number of years, can hope to earn upwards of £30,000 per year. (via PayScale)

Career Progression

Following on from a successful stint as a WordPress Developer, candidates may wish to progress into Project Management to utilise their industry experience.
