HR Director in Manchester or London | About the Role

The Human Resources Director has overall responsibility for all the people management functions within a company or organisation. Principal duties include devising and driving the HR strategy, leading the HR team and overseeing all relevant procedures and processes.

Typical responsibilities

Operating at director level alongside the other board members and senior managers, the HR Director’s responsibilities vary from company to company, but typically include:

  • Setting and enforcing best practice

  • Developing and leading the HR team

  • Promoting workforce productivity, efficiency and motivation

  • Supervising the wellbeing and safety of the workforce

  • Providing senior management with expert guidance on all HR-related issues

  • Developing the HR strategy, procedures and policies in line with the aims and principles of the organisation

  • Advising on compliance and risk management matters

  • Ensuring that HR policies are effectively communicated to staff and management

  • Taking charge of recruitment procedures and processes

  • Providing effective change management strategies

  • Establishing effective and compliant procedures for investigating and resolving grievances, and for managing redundancies and disciplinary matters

  • Evaluating and recommending training and development programmes

  • Managing employee rewards and benefits

  • Representing the organisation on HR matters

Requirements for the role

Any candidate for the post of HR Director will be expected to have extensive experience in a senior HR management position, proven ability in general HR and change management roles, significant experience in managing a team, strong communication and people skills and up-to-date knowledge of UK employment law. You should also be able to demonstrate the commercial awareness and impressive personal qualities expected in any candidate for a director level role. Most organisations will only consider qualified CIPD members, and will demand education to degree level plus all the relevant HR qualifications.
