SEO Strategist
As a SEO strategist you may work in-house for an employer or agency or become a freelance consultant who works independently on ad-hoc projects.
It is your role to research commercial SEO opportunities and collaborate with various marketing departments and external agencies to review, develop and implement strategic SEO campaigns that support the business objectives of your employer or client.
Typical Responsibilities for the SEO Strategist
Depending on the kind of employment route you choose, your responsibilities could vary greatly but broadly speaking they fall into the following three categories:
Research
You must be an organised, analytical thinker who can use the latest SEO analysis tools to audit and assess campaign performance, and balance your findings with commercial insights gained through in-depth research of the market, its competitors and consumers, to identify opportunities to increase site rankings, market reach and consumer engagement.
You must have a sound understanding how SEO fits within a wider marketing context, source and test new SEO tools and stay abreast of search engine algorithm developments.
Project Management
You will need to work closely with personnel from other departments as well as clients or third parties to develop and implement SEO strategies that support ad-hoc and long-term marketing campaigns.
You must be able to optimise site content and coding, source and acquire links, conduct outreach, test and monitor the performance of any SEO strategies you implement, troubleshoot and solve problems and deliver targeted results within a planned timescale and budget.
Reporting
You must be a clear verbal and written communicator who can consolidate the findings of your research and analysis to make sound business recommendations and write directives for the personnel tasked with implementing them. You will need to constantly review their effectiveness, overcome challenges and provide timely SEO campaign updates on your progress.
You may also need to write training materials and assist in the skill development of new SEO personnel or produce informative content for your company website or other social media.
Salary Range
Depending on the needs of your employer or client, your skills and the region you work in, you can expect to earn £20k to £40k+ as a SEO strategist, plus enjoy benefits and bonus packages depending on the organisation you choose.
Skills & Qualifications
Excellent organisation, keyword research and web analytics skills
Technical and creative problem solving
Good written and verbal communications
Sound understanding of digital marketing and content strategies
Detailed knowledge of SEO tools, technologies and search engine algorithms
Excellent attention to detail
Strong Excel skills
Able to work well independently or as part of a team
Commitment to training and furthering your own knowledge and expertise
Flexibility to travel or work outside regular office hours
Qualifications
There are no formal qualifications required for this role but it may be advantageous if you hold a degree in a relevant subject such as marketing or computer science, or professional qualifications from reputable bodies such as the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing (IDM) or Google.
Experience & Career Progression
Most employers will expect you to demonstrate a minimum of 1-2 years’ experience, a successful track record of SEO projects you have been integral to and a genuine passion for the role.
Career Progression
As a SEO strategist your skills are highly sought by organisations in a number of industries and your career could progress naturally into one of the following roles:
SEO Manager
Digital Marketing Strategist
Search Strategist
