Head of Digital Marketing Jobs

As the head of digital marketing you will usually hold a senior position within an organisation or agency but may also work independently as a freelance consultant.

It is your role to develop and implement a digital marketing strategy which utilises the skills of departmental marketing personnel and the latest digital techniques and technologies to increase the brand awareness, market share and profitability of your employer or client.

Typical Responsibilities for the Head of Digital Marketing

Depending on the scale and requirements of your employer or client, your responsibilities will vary but will generally fall into the following three categories:

Leadership

The commercial knowledge and marketing skills you have developed in your career to date will be relied upon to inform the decision making of company directors and the personnel under your supervision.

You will play an integral role in the development of an organisational digital marketing strategy which is challenging, measurable and deliverable and be responsible for overseeing its implementation. As such, you will be an organised and motivational leader who can direct campaign development and create an innovative, collaborative and performance-driven work culture.

You must be proactive about your continued skill development, facilitate training for personnel and ensure that all relevant parties are equipped with the latest information and tools they need to work efficiently and deliver results.

Analysis and Creativity

You must be an analytical thinker with exceptional commercial insight and research skills who can assess the market and identify opportunities to raise brand awareness, enter new markets and generate growth through the application of creative digital marketing solutions.

In a fast-paced industry, you will need to create a working environment that encourages and enables individuals to express their ideas, collaborate, take calculated risks and develop engaging and effective organic and paid search marketing materials.

Communication

Your strategic digital marketing plans will need to be clearly communicated in person or in writing to personnel in marketing and PR, finance, sales and distribution as well as external agencies and suppliers to ensure that everyone involved works efficiently towards achieving business goals.

You may also need to represent your employer or client at new business pitches, industry events and conferences and should be a confident, engaging public speaker.

Salary Range

As the head of digital marketing, you can expect to earn £29k to £60k+, plus enjoy benefits and bonus packages commensurate with your responsibilities, experience and work location.

Qualifications

Formal qualifications are not essential but a degree or professional certificates in a relevant subject such as marketing, business management or digital technologies may be advantageous.

Experience & Career Progression

You will generally need 5 or more years’ experience in digital marketing and a demonstrable track record of successful campaign and people management.
