Merseyside is a county in the North West of England. It is comprised of Knowsley, St Helens, Sefton, Wirral and Liverpool. Merseyside is so named after the river Mersey, which runs through the county. Merseyside boasts excellent transport links across the North and beyond, with regular train travel to London and an international airport. Merseyside also boasts one of the largest collections of listed buildings in the world, with the Docks and historic Waterfront in Liverpool, and the model town of Port Sunlight on the Wirral.

It’s a relatively new county, having only come into existence in 1974.It was previously part of Lancashire and Cheshire, two pre-existing neighbouring counties. Liverpool is the major city within Merseyside; known as a vibrant cultural centre in the UK. Home to many art galleries and museums, Aintree racecourse, two rival football teams and of course, The Beatles. Liverpool is renowned to be a city with a thriving creative and sporting culture that is as diverse as it is passionate.

Outside the city and across the river lies the Wirral Peninsula – an area filled with typically British seaside towns and promenades thanks to being almost entirely surrounded by water. Merseyside is also blessed with beaches to the north, encapsulating both Crosby and Formby. Formby is famed for it’s squirrel reserve, and for *that* beach scene in Peaky Blinders. In fact, much of Peaky Blinders has been filmed in various locations across Merseyside. In recent years it has become a popular film location, particularly in period dramas, and as an alternative to London. The famous Liver building and St George's Hall have been used as sets to represent Gotham in the latest Batman film.
