Blogging has been around for a while now, there are those
who blog and there are those who don't, whichever group you fall in
most people have heard about blogging. One thing that's for sure is
that there are many small to medium sized companies who are failing
to take advantage of the marketing opportunities provided to them
by blogging.
What is a blog? In short a blog is an online diary that
anyone can read, and that is easy to update regularly adding
elements like company updates, advice, links, photos or video clips
by following very simple procedures. Initially blogs (as was
twitter) were used by private individuals to document their daily
life or adventures and was mainly for the use of celebrities,
however as with most social media, things have moved on and very
quickly!
In the business world they've found a number of uses, most
commonly as a type of newsletter add-on to a company website. The
simple updating features mean that anyone can add the latest news
to the website, it also helps with SEO (search engine optimization)
which is a great benefit but I won't go into that right now. Whilst
also showing visitors to the site the latest products, services or
even just give them (ideally) helpful tips/advise (specialist
knowledge is just as useful as product innovation).
This simple method is a useful tool, but it doesn't
exploit the whole idea of blogs which is to build a regular
following; when people subscribe to any blog they receive
notifications of blog updates and so come back and visit regularly.
You can't build subscribers purely on press releases and recently
completed work photos so you have to get more creative, when done
well this helps you create your business
community/loyalty.
The idea is simple; give people something useful for free,
entice them back regularly and encourage them to try your services
as you do it. Then you will start to see the true value of
blogging.
