What does it mean to be inspired?

Back to Blogs

The definition of inspiration is as follows:

  • Arousal of the mind to special unusual activity or creativity
  • A product of your creative thinking and work; “he had little respect for the inspirations of other artists”; “after years of work his brainchild was a tangible reality”
  • A sudden intuition as part of solving a problem
  • Divine guidance: (theology) a special influence of a divinity on the minds of human beings; “they believe that the books of Scripture were written under divine guidance”
  • Arousing to a particular emotion or action

Inspiration is a funny thing, pragmatically it can be called upon or appear anywhere in life or the world. It might appear as an interview question ‘Who inspires you the most’, you might use it to push yourself further during a race or have an inspiring quote as your phone background.

The purpose of this blog is to highlight the importance of having a source of inspiration, something important, something to draw on, and something to believe in. As you go through life you may find yourself down, in need of a little push or just a reminder of how far you’ve come. Furthermore I think it’s important to understand what it means to be inspired and that you yourself can be an inspiration to others.

Inspiration can come in many forms it could be a quote, an item or a person. In a culture obsessed with measuring talent and ability, we often overlook the important role of inspiration. Inspiration awakens us to new possibilities by allowing us to transcend our ordinary experiences and limitations. Inspiration may sometimes be overlooked because of its elusive nature. Its history of being treated as supernatural or divine hasn’t helped the situation. But as recent research shows, inspiration can be activated, captured, and manipulated, and it has a major effect on important life outcomes. When you’re in a work environment where ‘sales targets’, getting in on time, looking good and maintaining a work/life balance, define your very role; we begin forget the most important things.

Inspiration doesn’t just have to be something that creates positivity; it can be so much more. Inspiration needs to spur creativity and fuel your well-being. In the workplace ‘keep calm’ posters stuck up by your boss might not be what you’re searching for. One of the best things you can find for inspiration is collaborate with a mentor. Actually finding someone in your industry who has ‘been there and done that’ will prove to be a highly valuable source of experience, advice and actual inspiration for you. Plus instead of being ‘static’ like a quote they’ll be providing constant titbits of insight.

At Adam we like all of our team to be inspired in their work so they can be innovative and autonomous in their work. That’s why we’re actively encouraging our team to share their stories and what inspires them, so others can learn and grow it.
